Hip Replacement may provide the greatest hope for ending your pain from arthritis or injury and restoring mobility. There are four main parts to the prosthetic hip. Your surgeon will select the parts that are best for you. They include: a cup-shaped device that replaces your hip socket, a liner that fits in the cup, a ball that replaces the head of your thigh bone, and a stem that fits inside your thigh bone for stability. These different parts are made from a variety of materials including titanium, metal alloys, high grade plastics, or ceramics.

Hip Replacement Q & A

Why do I need a hip replacement?

Your hip joint is a ball-and-socket type of joint made up of the head of your femur (thigh bone) and the acetabulum socket. Between years of wear and tear and any acute injuries that can occur in the weight-bearing joint, you may eventually need to have it replaced. Your orthopedic surgeon might determine that you’re a candidate for a hip replacement surgery (hip arthroplasty) if you have:
• Dislocation
• Complex fracture
• Osteoarthritis
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Severe hip stiffness
• Inherited hip disease

Usually, though, the hip replacement procedure is the last resort after exhausting conservative therapy efforts like medication and physical therapy.

What happens during a hip replacement?

Dr. Gregg Podleski utilizes the most advanced methods and techniques for performing hip replacement procedures. During surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, your orthopedic surgeon:

• Removes the damaged head of your femur bone
• Places a metal stem into the hollow part of your femur
• Covers the stem with a metal or ceramic ball
• Removes damaged cartilage from the hip socket
• Inserts a specialized spacer to create a gliding surface

Hip replacement procedures can be partial or total. A partial hip replacement involves replacing just the damaged portion of your hip joint, while the total hip replacement restores your entire hip.

How long is the recovery after a hip replacement?

Recovering from a hip replacement procedure takes time, but you should be up and walking around with little to no pain in as little as a week. You’re probably still going to need an assistive device, such as a cane or walker, during this time.

Dr. Gregg Podleski teaches you exercises you should be performing regularly to improve joint mobility and promote healing. Expect to go through roughly 2-4 physical therapy sessions weekly for at least 4-8 weeks. In most cases, you can return to all of your regular activities with no limitation by about 4-6 months.

Arthritis pain in your knee can limit your ability to enjoy your favorite activities, whether you play a sport, spend time in your garden, work out regularly, or take occasional long walks in the country. Daily, constant pain can even reduce your participation in social events and your time with family and friends.

Dr. Gregg Podleski will use the most advanced diagnostic tools to determine if surgery will put an end to your pain, and how extensive a procedure you need to reach this goal.

• Total knee replacement is the right option for people with severe osteoarthritis in the knee joint. The surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage and replaces it with prosthetic parts.
• Partial knee replacement may be appropriate for young patients, or for people with limited damage from arthritis.
• Arthroscopic surgery may be possible for people with localized damage that can be remedied by reshaping the bones in the joint. Many non-arthritic conditions can be treated with this minimally invasive surgery as well.
• Revision knee surgery replaces an artificial joint already in the knee. This is used when a patient's original prosthetic wears out or gets loose, or when there is new damage in the knee.
• Knee Osteotomy corrects alignment problems in the knee. This procedure is usually used with young athletes.

Knee Replacement Q & A

Am I a candidate for a knee replacement?
Your knee joint is the largest joint in your body, and you use it with each step you take. Repairing your natural bones and connective tissues is usually the first priority if you have a knee injury or chronic pain-causing condition.

Sometimes though, these treatments and procedures aren’t enough to help your knee heal. A knee replacement surgery might be the best option for you if:

• You have severe arthritic damage
• You have a complex fracture or injury
• Your knee pain worsens or doesn’t improve
• Conservative treatments and therapies are no longer helpful

The type of knee replacement you need just depends on your specific condition or injury. You may only need part of your knee replaced, or the entire joint replaced.

What is the difference between a partial and a total knee replacement?
Because of advancements in modern orthopedic surgeries, you can sometimes get the knee repairs you need without having to replace the entire joint. A partial knee replacement involves removing degenerated tissue and replacing only the affected portion of your knee cartilage with an artificial component. Generally, you’re only a candidate for a partial knee replacement if you have osteoarthritis that has severely damaged your knee joint.

A total knee replacement, medically known as knee arthroplasty, involves resurfacing your entire knee joint if you have more complex damage or injuries. After removing damaged cartilage from the tips of your femur and tibia bones, your orthopedic surgeon re-creates the joint surfaces with metal implants. They reshape the underside of your kneecap and insert a plastic spacer, which ultimately replaces your entire knee joint.

Do I need physical therapy after a knee replacement?
Yes. After your knee replacement surgery, you’re probably going to need to stay in the hospital for a few days. During this time, your orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Gregg Podleski, encourages you to move your feet and ankles regularly to prevent clotting. You might also be paired with a physical therapist to perform passive exercises throughout the day.

Once you return home after a knee replacement, you need to continue performing your specific exercises several times per day. You’re also going to need to meet with your physical therapist anywhere from 2-4 times per week for at least 4-8 weeks. If you’re wanting to return to exercise or sports after your knee replacement, Dr. Gregg Podleski, even provides sports conditioning therapy to help you get back in the game as quickly as possible.
